Travel Guide: Canggu, Bali Indonesia

Bali Indonesia is one of my  favorite places on earth. We traveled here for our honeymoon and I can honestly say it was some of the best weeks of my life. Bali has so much to offer, and it was the perfect place to explore as a newly married couple. We honeymooned for two weeks, and I kept a journal of all of our favorite spots, places to eat, and tips for other people and compiled it into this travel guide. I have divided this Bali Guide into three separate guides based on the cities we visited. This travel guide will be for Canggu, Bali Indonesia.

If you are visiting Bali, be sure to also check out my Ubud, Bali Guide and Nusa Penisa Guide.

Travel Guide: Canggu, Bali Indonesia

Getting There:

The drive from the airport to Canggu is about 40 minutes (obviously can change depending on traffic). A taxi ride is usually between 200,000 to 250,00 rupiah, which is about $13.00-$17.00 USD (as of Dec 2018).

Last time we went, we arranged a taxi pickup with our Airbnb before we arrived which made the entire process run very smoothly. Reach out to your hotel or airbnb to see if they have drivers that can pick you up!

Pro tip: Be sure to agree on a price with your taxi driver before entering the cab. Agree on a price and then enter the vehicle. Also, do not be afraid to bargain with the taxi drivers if they are telling you a price that is much higher than it should be! Almost every time, you will be able to talk them down in price.

If you are planning on staying in an Airbnb (which I highly recommend in Bali) , I have a code for my readers that gives them $40 off their first stay!

Beaches:

Berawa Beach: This was our favorite beach by far in Canggu. It was a two minute motorbike ride from our villa, and we would come here every single night to walk along the beach and watch the sunset. Berawa beach is also home to the famous Finns Beach Club. This is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat or drink while basking in the warm sun all day long.

Batu Balong Beach: Batu Balong Beach is a great place to hang out and spend the day. It is also home to Old Mans is which is a bar and hangout for many young adult travelers. We spent a couple late afternoons walking this beach and enjoying the fun atmosphere.

Echo Beach: This beach is a black sand beach which was so cool to see. I am from southern California orignally, and I had never experienced a black sand beach until I came to Echo Beach. Echo is most famous as a surf spot, so if you are looking for surf this is the place. As just a regular beach goer, I would probably choose Berawa or Batu Balong over Echo. It was still fun to watch surfers from across the world at this spot.

Eats:

Dues Ex Machina: For those of you who are unfamiliar with the brand Deus Ex Machina, it is a surf/moto brand that happens to have spot right in the middle of Canggu. This is not only a restaurant, but a store, motorcycle garage, barbershop, skate park, and hangout with live music. We spent several afternoons and evenings watching the skaters, grabbing a bite to eat, and listening to live music. Do not miss this place if you are in Canggu.

Nalu Bowls: Nalu Bowls is located right along Echo Beach, and makes for a perfect post beach snack. Their smoothie bowls are one of the most instagrammed foods in all of Canggu. They are equally delicious and Instagram worthy.

Happy Bird Cafe: my husband begged me to come here almost every afternoon because he was obsessed with their famous balinese dish called Nasi Goreng. The prices here are very cheap and we would always try one of their amazing juices each meal.

Crate Cafe: Crate is located across the street from Deus Ex Machina in the heart of Canggu. They have amazing smoothie bowls, power bowls, and toasts. I recommend going here for breakfast or brunch.

Peloton: Peloton is a plant based restaurant with amazing food. I am not vegetarian or vegan, but I still loved all of the food on the menu. If you do live a plant based diet, this is definitely one of the top places in Canggu to check out.

Things to Do:

Visit Tanah Lot Temple: Tanah Lot is one of the most famous temples in Bali and you shouldn’t miss it while in Canggu. It is not located right in Canggu, but is actually a bit north. The sunsets here are unreal is a must do.

Pro tip: We rode our scooters to Tanah Lot which was fine, but if you are not very comfortable on your motorbike, I would just take a taxi. My husband has ridden motorcycles his entire life so he was comfortable and I just hung on for dear life. Had I not been riding with him I would have just taken a taxi.

Shop at the Markets: There are several street markets in Canggu, and our favorite was Love Anchor market. It is a fun place to find trinkets to bring home to friends and family or a souvenir of your own.

Eat, Eat, Eat: This may sound silly, but we literally planned our days around where we wanted to eat. There are so many amazing places to eat and with the prices so low, we tried to partake and enjoy as much as we could.

Beaches: Bali is known for the best beaches and surfing. I highly recommend spending most of your time lounging and playing in the sand.

Getting Around:

Motorbike: renting a motorbike is the way to go not only in Canggu, but pretty much all of Bali. The roads and the way locals drive are pretty insane, but as long as you just go with the flow of traffic be careful, it really is the best way to get around. Motorbikes are very cheap for several day rentals so I recommend renting a bike for everyday you are there so you can just keep it at your house/hotel.

Taxi: If motorbikes are not your thing, you can walk or taxi to where you need to go.

Comment below if you have any other suggestions. I would love to go back soon, and I am always looking for ideas and recommendations.
